Welding Classes

DISCLAIMER:   These classes are intended to introduce newcomers to the possibilities of Arc Welding (MIG and Flux-core) and ARE NOT training for entering the welding/fabrication industry.  This program DOES NOT confer any certification nor does it provide adequate instruction for the student to apply to a job or work environment.

Our welding classes are designed for beginners contemplating purchasing a welder for home/hobby use or those who have a welder and/or minimal experience but who would benefit from guided practice and tips from an experienced welder to improve their success with their personal projects.  Students will learn how to see the 'puddle' and guide the arc to produce effective welds.  They will also be introduced to basic tools related to welding including files, grinders, and more. Students will complete two projects to take home.

Career entry?

These classes CAN provide an opportunity for those who are thinking of going into metalwork or welding or fabrication as a career by giving the student a chance to speak to a professional, certified welder and to get some hands-on experience that will provide insight into what is involved in a career in metalworking.  As such, it can be a valuable first step for those considering entering the field.

Starting out

All students begin with our "Introduction to Welding" course.  This applies even to those with prior experience although the content of the course differs somewhat for those with experience.    All students get a review of the risks, hazards, safety concerns and procedures to reduce those risks.  All get an introduction to the equipment we will be using and an orientation to the shop and the shop policies.  This introductory course focuses only on MIG welding, although we do discuss the other types of welding.

Then the beginners will review the basic principles and physics of arc welding and start with the proper techniques for safely running a bead on mild steel.  They will also learn about 'pushing' or 'dragging' the arc and how that affects the weld.  After sufficient practice, the student will begin assembling a small project that will allow them to apply and improve their skills while creating an object to take home.

Previous Experience

The students with previous experience will also review safety concerns and shop familiarization and policies but then will briefly demonstrate their level of knowledge and skill.  At that time they will move into a guided practice / applied practice based on their interests or needs.

Additional Classes

Individually tailored guided practice sessions will be available for students with particular interests or who just wish more practice.

There will also be future classes for stick welding and later in the fall we hope to have Open Shop time for students to come in and use the shop for their projects.
